Cubic yards = coverage area × soil depth ÷ 27.
BuildCalc converts measurements to a consistent internal unit, applies your project geometry and only then adds the selected waste allowance. Packaging quantities are rounded up because partial bags, blocks or boxes usually cannot be ordered.
Topsoil is normally ordered by volume, while its weight changes with moisture and composition. Measure the finished coverage area and depth, then allow for settlement only when it is appropriate for the placement method. Supplier blend, screening and delivery minimums should be checked separately.
A 4 in layer over a 20 ft by 10 ft area contains about 66.7 cubic feet, or 2.47 cubic yards. With a 10% allowance for handling and settlement, the planning quantity is about 2.72 cubic yards.
Moisture, organic matter, mineral content and compaction all change bulk density. Suppliers usually price and load topsoil by their own measured unit.
Only through the waste or allowance percentage you choose. Adjust it to match the material and placement conditions instead of relying on the default.
