FORMULA

How this estimate works

Volume = area × depth; tons = cubic feet × density ÷ 2,000.

BuildCalc converts measurements to a consistent internal unit, applies your project geometry and only then adds the selected waste allowance. Packaging quantities are rounded up because partial bags, blocks or boxes usually cannot be ordered.

BEFORE YOU ORDER

Field notes

  • Wet sand can weigh substantially more.
  • Washed, masonry and fill sands have different densities.
  • Order-unit rounding is supplier specific.
PRACTICAL GUIDE

How to plan with this sand calculator

Sand products differ significantly in gradation, moisture and bulk density. Use this calculator for geometric volume first, then compare its approximate tonnage with a local supplier's product data. Measure each area separately when depths or sand types differ.

WORKED EXAMPLE

Example: a 20 × 10 ft bedding layer

A 2 in layer over 200 square feet contains about 33.3 cubic feet, or 1.23 cubic yards. At an assumed dry bulk density of 100 lb per cubic foot, the weight is approximately 1.67 tons before waste.

USE THIS TOOL FOR

Good planning fits

  • Paver or pipe bedding estimates
  • Landscape and play-area fill
  • Comparing volume and weight ordering units
COMMON QUESTIONS

Sand Calculator FAQ

Does wet sand weigh more than dry sand?

Yes. Moisture can materially increase delivered weight, so a generic density conversion should be treated as an approximation.

Can masonry sand and fill sand use the same density?

Not reliably. Product gradation and moisture differ. Replace the planning density with supplier information whenever possible.
