Results use your measurements and editable assumptions. Verify product coverage, density, waste and order rounding with the supplier before purchasing.

FORMULA

How this estimate works

Tons = compacted volume × assumed density ÷ 2,000.

BuildCalc converts measurements to a consistent internal unit, applies your project geometry and only then adds the selected waste allowance. Packaging quantities are rounded up because partial bags, blocks or boxes usually cannot be ordered.

BEFORE YOU ORDER

Field notes

  • Use compacted lift thickness, not loose thickness.
  • Mix density varies by specification.
  • Confirm minimum delivery quantities with the asphalt plant.
PRACTICAL GUIDE

How to plan with this asphalt calculator

Asphalt quantity depends on compacted area, lift thickness and mix density. Enter the finished dimensions and intended compacted depth, then confirm the density and minimum delivery quantity with the asphalt producer. Complex tapers and variable-depth repairs should be divided into separate sections.

WORKED EXAMPLE

Example: a 50 × 10 ft driveway section

At a compacted depth of 2 in, a 50 ft by 10 ft section contains about 83.3 cubic feet. Using a planning density of 145 lb per cubic foot gives roughly 6.04 tons before waste and supplier rounding.

USE THIS TOOL FOR

Good planning fits

  • Simple rectangular driveway sections
  • Preliminary hot-mix tonnage
  • Testing the effect of compacted lift thickness
COMMON QUESTIONS

Asphalt Calculator FAQ

Is asphalt ordered from loose or compacted volume?

Project thickness is generally specified as compacted thickness. The producer or paving contractor accounts for placement and compaction when planning delivery.

Does this estimate include an aggregate base?

No. It covers asphalt mix only. Base stone, tack coat, excavation, disposal, labor and equipment are separate.
