FORMULA

How this estimate works

Bundles = roofing squares × bundles per square, rounded up.

BuildCalc converts measurements to a consistent internal unit, applies your project geometry and only then adds the selected waste allowance. Packaging quantities are rounded up because partial bags, blocks or boxes usually cannot be ordered.

BEFORE YOU ORDER

Field notes

  • Architectural shingles may use different bundle coverage.
  • Starter strip, ridge cap and underlayment are separate.
  • Confirm package coverage with the manufacturer.
PRACTICAL GUIDE

How to plan with this shingle calculator

Use this estimator after confirming the roof planes and pitch from plans or safe measurements. The calculator turns sloped area into roofing squares, then applies the package rate you enter. Product coverage for field shingles, starter and ridge materials should be checked independently.

WORKED EXAMPLE

Example: bundles for a 40 × 30 ft building

At a 6-in-12 pitch with 12% waste, the example footprint produces about 15.03 roofing squares. If the selected shingles require three bundles per square, the field-shingle estimate rounds up to 46 bundles.

USE THIS TOOL FOR

Good planning fits

  • Field-shingle bundle estimates
  • Comparing bundles-per-square packaging
  • Simple roof planes with an editable waste factor
COMMON QUESTIONS

Shingle Calculator FAQ

Do all shingles use three bundles per square?

No. Packaging varies by product and design. Enter the bundles-per-square value from the manufacturer rather than assuming three.

Why can a complex roof need more waste?

Valleys, hips, dormers, short courses and pattern alignment create more cuts and unusable offcuts than a simple rectangular plane.
