FORMULA

How this estimate works

Roof area = footprint area × pitch multiplier. Squares = area ÷ 100.

BuildCalc converts measurements to a consistent internal unit, applies your project geometry and only then adds the selected waste allowance. Packaging quantities are rounded up because partial bags, blocks or boxes usually cannot be ordered.

BEFORE YOU ORDER

Field notes

  • Measure roof geometry safely from plans whenever possible.
  • Valleys, dormers and hips increase waste.
  • This does not evaluate structure or installation requirements.
PRACTICAL GUIDE

How to plan with this roofing calculator

This calculator converts a rectangular building footprint to sloped roof area using a pitch multiplier. It is intended for simple preliminary estimates from plans or safe ground measurements. Hips, valleys, dormers, overhangs and separate roof planes should be measured as distinct sections.

WORKED EXAMPLE

Example: a 40 × 30 ft footprint

A 6-in-12 pitch applies a multiplier of about 1.118 to the 1,200 square foot footprint, giving roughly 1,342 square feet of roof surface. With 12% waste, the order area is about 1,503 square feet, or 15.03 roofing squares.

USE THIS TOOL FOR

Good planning fits

  • Simple gable-roof planning
  • Converting pitch to sloped area
  • Preliminary roofing squares and bundles
COMMON QUESTIONS

Roofing Calculator FAQ

What is one roofing square?

A roofing square is 100 square feet of roof surface. It is an ordering unit, not the same as the building footprint.

Are starter, ridge and underlayment included?

No. Starter strip, ridge cap, underlayment, flashing, ventilation and fasteners require separate takeoffs.
