FORMULAHow this estimate works
Cubic yards = length × width × depth in feet ÷ 27.
BuildCalc converts measurements to a consistent internal unit, applies your project geometry and only then adds the selected waste allowance. Packaging quantities are rounded up because partial bags, blocks or boxes usually cannot be ordered.
BEFORE YOU ORDERField notes
- Keep all inputs in consistent units.
- This is geometric volume; it does not include compaction.
- Split irregular shapes and add their volumes.
PRACTICAL GUIDEHow to plan with this cubic yard calculator
This general volume calculator is useful before moving to a material-specific estimator. Keep all dimensions in the correct units, divide irregular spaces into non-overlapping rectangles, and remember that geometric volume does not account for compaction, bulking or container voids.
WORKED EXAMPLEExample: exactly three cubic yards
An area 18 ft long by 9 ft wide at a depth of 6 in contains 81 cubic feet. Dividing by 27 converts the result to exactly 3 cubic yards.
USE THIS TOOL FORGood planning fits
- Bulk soil, gravel or debris volume
- Rectangular bins and containers

COMMON QUESTIONSCubic Yard Calculator FAQ
How many cubic feet are in a cubic yard?
There are 27 cubic feet in one cubic yard because one yard equals three feet in each of three dimensions: 3 × 3 × 3.
Does cubic-yard volume equal delivered material quantity?
Not always. Loose fill, compaction, moisture, settling and supplier rounding can make the delivered quantity differ from geometric volume.
